The Mobil in North Village , Reston changed to Sunoco earlier this year. Now run by people who cannot speak English, so I have stopped going there.

One of the interesting things I saw was that on Gallows Rd., in Dunn Loring, the switchover from Mobil to Sunoco meant that we had 2 Sunoco stations literally next to one another for over a year. Both were clearly operated by different organizations, and judging by the sometimes noticeable difference in prices, they may have been supplied under different contracts. The older Sunoco abruptly closed its doors recently, and I've been trying to figure out whether it will be leased again as a Sunoco or not. Certainly, they've taken out none of the Sunoco branding or pumps, even though it's been closed since July.

The Mobil station in Williamsburg changed to a BP. I guess they were owned by somebody else and decided to change independently of the other stations.

I have seen several Mobil stations change to Sunoco in Vienna, Sterling and Leesburg. I recently noticed a Mobil station in Purcellville change to Shell - the first time I had seen a transition to that brand. Thanks to previous posters for reporting the reason for the changes.

Mobil sold all their stations in the state to Sunoco. Stations in Richmond and the Tidewater region have all changed to Sunoco, while a few went unbranded.

As a condition of the Exxon Mobil merger the Justice Dept had Mobil sell their Northern Virginia stations as well as the tank farm in Manassas to Sunoco.

Thank you RETIREMAN. That is very enlightening. That explains why all the Mobils in Manassas have the sign saying Sunoco is coming.

The Exxon-Mobil merger requires Mobil to sell 300 plus stations plus the Manassas Va. tank farm to Sun oil company of Phil. Pa. for FTC. requirements.

All the Mobil stations I spot from Manassas to Culpeper have signs up that they are changing to Sunoco. I was thinking the the distributor, E E Wine in Manassas had changed brands but this seems too wide spread.

I watched Gatehouse Mobil, at the intersection of Route 50 and Gallows Road in Merrifield, abruptly become a Sunoco yesterday. Unlike other Mobil to Sunoco conversions in the area, I hadn't seen any signs announcing the change until I saw the crews actually rebranding the station. I think that this station and Vienna Mobil were the last two Mobil stations in my immediate area.

The last Mobil station that I see routinely--at Maple Ave & Center St in Vienna, VA--has a "Coming Soon-Sunoco" sign up.

As I noted in a previous post, all the Mobils in Reston/Herndon have long since changed to Sunoco. With the changeover, the prices have become a lot more competitive.
For those in the Reston/Herndon area of Nova, there is a brand new gas station (Sunoco) planned at Sunset Hills Rd. just east of the FFX County Parkway (near Target). For those that know the area, there really is a dearth of gas stations around the Reston Town Center area and points west along Sunset Hills Road/Spring Street. (There is one Exxon across from The Spectrum on the northern fringe of Reston Town Center.) In fact, there is only ONE gas station within a 1/2 mile of Exits 11 through 14 off the Dulles Toll Rd. (The Exxon off Wiehle Avenue and Sunset Hills Rd.) There are no stations within even a mile of the exits at FFX County Parkway, Reston Parkway and Hunter Mill Rd. The new Sunoco off Sunset Hills Rd near Target oughta do a booming business!

Just about all the Mobil stations I used to know are now Sunoco stations. Oddly enough, Gatehouse Mobil (Gallows Road at Route 50 in Merrifield) shows no sign of turning into anything else.
My guess is that ExxonMobil is tired of maintaining two separate brand identifies in a single market and is starting to consolidate everything in the mid-Atlantic area under the Exxon name.

Scratch another Mobil at Gallows Rd and Cedar Lane in Dunn Loring--now a Sunoco. This is especially puzzling because just across Cedar Lane on the same side of Gallows Rd is another Sunoco.

Looks like another Mobil is getting ready to bite the dust--Chain Bridge Rd & Old Courthouse Rd in Tysons Corner. The price sign is now in Sunoco colors while the rest of the station is still in Mobil colors.

I noticed on a recent trip to Maryland, I passed one station (not a Sunoco, it was some local place) that had 5 grades of fuel available. There is also a 7-Eleven in the Short Pump area of Richmond with 5 grades available. I have to wonder if that is really necessary. I mean.. does 88 octane really make that much more of a difference than 87 or 89?

It be nice if all the new Sunoco stations (after the re-branding from Mobil) did offer the 4 octane levels. Generally, the highest octane offered is 94, but the next step down was generally a 91 octane. MOST cars who require premium fuel need only 91 octane or higher, so the 3rd most expensive fuel (rather than the most expensive fuel) can often be used. In the end, you save a bit of money by using the 91 octane which is generally priced between the typical mid-grade and premium.
All of the Mobils in the Reston/Herndon/Sterling area have rebranded to Sunoco, most changed over the second half of last year.

>>Now, I know they have a 94 octane, which I think is the premium price on the road signs...<<
During a recent fill-up at a Centreville Sunoco, I noted that 93 "ultra" was the highest grade available. The other two grades were 87 and 89. Price structure was the standard 10 cent spread.

Yeah, I figured since they were just rebranding stations they wouldn't spend money and put in pumps for that. Although, don't let the signs fool you, most of the Sunono's up north only post the 3 grades on their sign, and the price for the 4th grade is only on the pump. Now, I know they have a 94 octane, which I think is the premium price on the road signs, and if I remember, whatever the next grade down from that is, which isn't the mid-grade they post on the sign, is only like 2 cents less or so.
Which leads to another thing, all the gas stations up there not only have their street signs, but they have the prices posted on top of every pump. That's a lot of prices to change.

The Sunoco I frequent in Centreville has 3 grades and no diesel. The other two in Centreville have 3 grades plus diesel. Based on the price signs from the other Sunoco's I pass in NoVA, none show 4 grades.

Do these Sunocos up there have the 4 grades of gas like the ones up north? The few Sunocos we have down here only have the three.

All three of the Mobil stations in Centreville and the two Mobil stations in Chantilly changed to Sunoco within the last 6 months. The one Mobil station in downtown Vienna changed to Sunoco and then closed to be replaced by a bank. One Mobil station in Tysons Corner changed to Sunoco while another went independent.

I dunno the reason, but it's been happening in a lot of places. I know there's one Mobil down in Suffolk even that changed to a Sunoco. I haven't seen any in Richmond though. Most Mobil stations here are the old Auto Service ones, and I doubt they'd put forth the money to do it.
