EPA chief says fracking regulations don't have to be federal

NJ.com -- States are right to take the lead on the issue of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the natural gas technology that some environmentalists accuse of polluting groundwater, said Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson today at an event at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Asked what the odds were that fracking can comply with environmental law, Jackson laughed and joked about nearby gambling hub Atlantic City.

“They’re good. You can bet on that,” Jackson said. “I believe fracking as a technology is perfectly capable of being clean. But it requires people who are doing it and the innovators who create technology to make sure it be done right.”

She said regulation of fracking doesn’t necessarily need to be federal,

The STATES (not the feds) should provide broad outlines of compliance and the details should be fleshed out by the industry. They are the ones with "skin in the game".

I think that the states ought to get off their duffs and do something, like if you allow the federal govt to do it all they will want it all. They will try and run the whole show and it shouldn't be like that.

This is probably best left up to the states, considering that different states have different geological and environmental issues.

Fracking of oil wells is not anything new. Back in the 50's and 60's when my family farm had oil wells on it, I remember when they did fracking all the time.
